David Hatcher Childress

David Hatcher Childress

Rogue archaeologist of lost civilizations.

The rogue archaeologist

David Hatcher Childress did not start as an academic and has never tried to pass for one. He calls himself a rogue archaeologist, and the title is earned. After leaving college in 1976 he began the kind of multi-year, multi-continent journey almost nobody does anymore: overland through Africa and the Middle East, across Asia and the Pacific, through South America, looking for the lost cities and megalithic sites his university courses had never mentioned. The travel itself became the method. He has been doing it now for nearly fifty years, and the cumulative knowledge of having actually been to the sites in person sets him apart from almost any other researcher in the field.

The Lost Cities series

David is the author of more than forty books. The foundation is the Lost Cities series: Lost Cities of Atlantis, Ancient Europe and the Mediterranean; Lost Cities of Africa and Arabia; Lost Cities of China, Central Asia and India; Lost Cities of North and Central America; Lost Cities of South America; and Lost Cities of Ancient Lemuria and the Pacific. Each volume combines first-hand site documentation with a synthesis of the alternative-history literature on the region. Beyond the series, his catalog covers suppressed technology (Technology of the Gods), anti-gravity research (The Anti-Gravity Handbook), the Anunnaki, ancient flight (Vimana Aircraft of Ancient India), and many others. Few authors in any field have produced this much, on this many subjects, this consistently.

Adventures Unlimited Press and the World Explorers Club

David is also a publisher and an organizer of researchers. He founded Adventures Unlimited Press, one of the longest-running independent presses in the alternative-history field, which has kept in print many out-of-print classics that would otherwise have vanished while publishing dozens of contemporary authors whose work would not have found a mainstream home. He also founded the World Explorers Club, an organization for researchers and travelers doing the same kind of expeditionary work he made his career on. The infrastructure he built around himself is part of why the field has the shape it does today.

Ancient Aliens

For more than a decade David has been a cast member on Ancient Aliens on the History Channel, one of the most-watched programs in cable television. His role on the show has put the deep-history conversation in front of an audience of tens of millions who would otherwise never have encountered it. Whatever one thinks of the show's framing, its reach has been transformational for the wider field, and David is one of the small handful of regulars who appear across the entire run.

Where to find him

David continues to travel, write, publish, and appear on television. Adventures Unlimited Press publishes new titles on a roughly annual cadence, and the Adventures Unlimited YouTube channel covers ongoing research from the press and from his own expeditions. After five decades he remains one of the most curious and most widely traveled researchers in the field.
